Curriculum of Education

It's just another article of my assignment from Critical Reading and Writing class. In this assignment we're discussing about a curriculum of Indonesian education. This task is started by sharing about our experience in high school about curriculum, well then I discussed it with a friend of mine who was sitting next to me, Tiara. Then the result of the sharing is made into a writing, yeah, it was like free writing. Finishing writing about what I've shared to Tiara, my lecturer asked us to make an argumentative article based on the thing that we've shared, then adding our knowledge about education curriculum. Here, I'm gonna show you my free writing about curriculum that I've discussed with Tiara, tadaaaaa :

P.S sorry for my bad hand-writing :p

then, having done with the sharing moment project, every student had to make an argumentative article like what I've said before, and this is my writing, feel free to give comment anyway . . .

ENGLISH CANNOT BE OMITTED
FROM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
 by Haniah Hamidah Sahid

“... memajukan kesejahteraan umum, mencerdaskan kehidupan bangsa, dan ikut melaksanakan ketertiban dunia ... .”
Looking at The Preamble of 1945 Constitution of Indonesia, we can see that education is one of Indonesian’s visions, but has that vision been achieved? The answer is probably not yet, that is why we need a curriculum to arrange the education system. The curriculum itself is often changed following the time in order to get the best result of education system development, so hopefully Indonesia will be able to have good quality for every single person in Indonesia who has been educated. Indonesia has experienced many curricula  before 1945, Indonesia used to use many curriculum from Netherlands, the colonizer of Indonesia. It was just after 1945 Indonesia used the curriculum which were made by Indonesia originally, those were Curriculum 1947, Curriculum 1952, Rentjana Pelajaran Terurai 1952, Curriclum 1964, Rentjana Pendidikan 1964, Curriculum 1964, Curriculum 1984, Curriculum 1994 and Suplemen Kurikulum 1999, Curriculum 2004, KBK (Kurikulum Berbasis Kompetensi), Curriculum 2006 and the latest is KTSP (Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan). English is automatically included as a subject which uses those curriculum, or in other word the curriculum of English always follow the curriculum which is applied. The question is whether it does work or not. Let see the fact of English development in students.
Some students learn a lot of English from school which is designed in curriculum because they did not learn or practice English outside of class. Yet, actually when they were in High School they did not understand exactly what the function of curriculum is, the matter is they understand the lesson which is transferred by the teachers to them. The problem is maybe because the teachers did never give the syllabus to the students, or if the teachers did but they did not tell the students why they must have the syllabus. Is the curriculum that important? Yes, it is.
Curriculum must be an important thing for teacher to make a lesson plan for students so that the materials will be well-organized, and it is important for the teacher to give and explain the curriculum or syllabus to the students, moreover the implementation of KTSP is how the teacher deliver the message of the curriculum to the students to shape their competence that are compatible with their characters and abilities. So, here the teachers should facilitate the learning process to the students in order to make them be able to interact with their environment so that they will have better behavior. Just imagine if learning process which is started without knowing the syllabus happens continually  it will be a big problem for education system. Moreover for teaching English subject in this globalization era, the teacher cannot teach the student like transferring data to the student. English is no longer as ‘strange’ subject, but now it seems like a must for student to be able to use English actively in reading, listening, writing and speaking. Student needs to practice English as often as possible, not only receiving the theory from one source, the teacher. Student needs and has to explore their knowledge by looking for other sources and practice a lot, because learning English only in a class is not enough. So, once again, teacher needs to give the syllabus or curriculum to student that students will understand what they should achieve after one semester learning in the class.
Looking back again to the vision of Indonesia on the Preamble of 1945 Constitution of Indonesia, develop the nation’s intellectual life, so to make it come true,Indonesian government always tries to look for the most applicable education system for Indonesia by changing the curriculum, and the newest plan is changing the KTSP with Curriculum 2013, that means the curriculum of English also changes, moreover the fact is English subject will be omitted from Elementary School, so student will learn English on high school. Is it a good decision? The answer is big no. It will be too late for the students if they have to start learning English at young or adult age. They should learn a language in a very beginning age.
According to one of Krashen’s language acquisition theory, English has natural order which means the acquisition of grammatical structures proceeds in a predictable order. So, we can deduce that English as the second language for Indonesian also has natural order that means students will have their own level to learn English. It is false if English subject in elementary school burdens the students and make them forget the mother tongue or Bahasa Indonesia and their original culture. It has been right if English is taught since early age. In the early age they learn the vocabulary because children don’t have yet the ability to understand the grammar. At the next level, or when they grow up they will be ready to receive any explanation of grammar because according to Piaget, they have been already at concrete operational stage, so they will understand about grammar. Just imagine that the students just know English at the young age, they will get problems because at their age they should understand the grammar or the rule of language but they don’t know the vocabulary at all. The result will be the English language will not develop naturally, there will be many enforcement of understanding English. So, a decision to omit English from elementary school in Curriculum 2013 is a big mistake. Forever, we cannot omit English from elementary school, so the students will not get problem or big difficulty in learning English in Junior and Senior High School.
If English is still seen as the reason students forget their original culture, include Bahasa Indonesia, we need to take a look at the paradigm of Ki Hajar Dewantara, the figure of Indonesian education, that is education should emphasize nation, independence and self-autonomy. So, if the education should  focus on those three things, is it always about teaching ‘what will you do if your friend is in the trouble’, ‘what should you do if your friend has different religion from you and he/she is going to do his/her ritual’, ‘what does provision 28 of 1945 Constitution tell about?’  or ‘Ini bapak Budi’ and ‘Ini ibu budi’? No, it is not. To achieve those three things we do not only teach Civic Education (Pendidikan Kewarganegaraan) and Bahasa Indonesia too much. We also need to explore our country by doing cooperation with other countries all over the world such as introducing our culture to other countries, doing export Indonesian output to get income, contributing to the implementation of a world order based on freedom, lasting peace and social justice, etc. So, how do we do that? Teaching English to student of course. Whether we like or not, English is now a need of every single person to survive in this globalization era, because English is a global language which is able to connect one another. So, we can conclude that omitting English from Elementary School is kind of a mistake, because however learning second language is just the same as learning first language. We will have the natural order to teach that. It will be difficult to students if they have just known English in the high school whereas everything nowadays is connected to English practice such as gadget, public service instructions, etc.
Thus, it is better for Indonesia to keep English as the main subject in education system, but in order to maintain the nation, independence and self-autonomy values, we can take Indonesian values on the topic of English lesson, so that student will be able to develop their skill as the local and global society.

MOVING ON

is a good idea, isn't it?

Diversity, Education, Globalization

Several weeks ago, I got assignments to make a mind map based on some articles and a review of an article (Critical Reading and Writing class). If a cup of mocca coffee is combination of milk, chocolate and coffee, my assignment is combination of diversity, education and globalization.
Well, firstly my lecturer gave an article Diversity in Education in an Era of Globalization (Anita Dighe). Then she asked the students to make a mind map of that article, including our position when we're reading that article, and to develop our knowledge, she asked us to look for other sources with same issue so that we can have better understanding in making a mind map, the mistake was. . . I only read ONE article, Opinion : Diversity in the Curriculum is the Next Step for Leadership in a Globally Interconnected World (Alison Akant and Sandra B. Durant), beside first article from my lecturer, but yeeaaahh that's okay, finally I finished my assignment, and here it is my mind map . . . not really good, but . . . . I was trying my best to make it ;)
P.S. sorry for my bad hand-writing, heheheee . . .

and the second assignment is making a review of the first article, well, I'm not really good in critical thinking, but yeaah I'm trying and trying, because my lecturer said that a habit of thinking, reading and writing critically is able to be build . . . and this is my review . . .

Diversity in Education in an Era of Globalization
Anita Dighe
Reviewed by Hani Sahid
Sanata Dharma University

Dighe’s article entitled Diversity in Education in an Era of Globaization  is an article with an idea about education system which can be applied in the era of globalization. This article would be a reference to educator to develop a better education system.
The way she introduces her claim is good, by explaining about globalization, but it is so narrow, it is better to give a brief explanation of globalization in general then she can start to claim globalization in a specific way. Then she brings India as the example of a country that gets bad impact of globalization. It is better to add more examples in the article and it is also better if she also gives an example of the education system condition of advance country, so her claims will be more supported, because in fact, globalization does not only give bad impact to develop country but also to advance country.
The main idea of Dighe’s claim is based on Rogers (1999) that there are three main development discourses those are deficit, disadvantage and diversity. Deficit itself means people are not able and education is transformed, while disadvantage discourse means all structure in the society is caused by the privileged. The last is diversity discourse, it is valued as the best education system which is flexible, adaptable and able to be used by all people who are different from one another. Another references that she takes to support her claim is Torres’ (2000) which said that the ultimate goal of education is learning and learning has to meet the needs and interests of learner, diversity is the norm, so then there will be no single pattern for everybody but does not mean creating discrimination. Dighe’s claim about diversity discourse is great because by applying diversity discourse, it means the educator lead the learner to be an active learner, it is the same as Driyarkara’s philosophy – education is defined as an attempt to humanize a young man or a young man lifting the human level (1950, 74) or it can be simply said humanizing the human being. The claim is agreeable that in education, educator  does not only give knowledge to other but also gives the experience to the learner.
Beside the content of the article which is good, actually the way Dighe writes this article is also good because she gives a real example and gives theories of two experts to support her claim, but this article will be difficult to understand by people that do not really good in language because she uses uncommon words, though that is what makes this article is interesting and challenging. Overall, Dighe’s claim – the best education system that may be applied is diversity discourse – is really agreeable and acceptable.

Sherlock Holmes : A Study in Pink

Are you a reader of Sherlock Holmes novel ? WOW GREAT, this part must be something interesting for you (hopefully). Well, like what I do before, I have to do an analysis of a movie, and the movie is Sherlock Holmes : A Study in Pink. This is a serial movie, I've just watched it in my Movie Interpretation class and like I said before here , I don't master in doing analysis but I will try to show you my analysis, finally comment or criticism are welcome and here it is the analysis . . .

Narrative Elements Part 2 Analysis :
SHERLOCK HOLMES : A STUDY IN PINK
by Haniah Hamidah Sahid

INTRODUCTION
Sherlock Holmes : A Study in Pink is the first episode of Sherlock television series. It was broadcasted first time on 25 July 2010 on BBC. The story of A Study in Pink is based on the first Sherlock Holmes novel, that is A Study in Scarlet.
This movie has restricted narration where we, as the audience, do not know at all what happen next. Our understanding is only depending on the character’s understanding, so we look at the movie by using character’s point of view. The main characters whom I am  going to analyze are Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch), Dr. John H. Watson (Martin Freeman) and Jeff / the cabbie man (Philip Davis).
CHARACTER AND CHARACTERIZATION
Characterization is sum of all obervable qualities of a human being, everything knowable through careful scrunity. (Robert Mckee), while
Character is revealed in the choices a human being makes under pressure – the greater the pressure, the deeper the revelation, the truer the choice to the character’s essential nature. (Robert Mckee)
So, I conclude that the existance of characterization is coming first and then the character, and also they are contrast to each other, and character may change depends on the situation which is faced by the character (figure). Here these are the characterization and the character of Sherlock Holmes, John Watson and Jeff the cabbie man.
Name of characters
Characterization
Character
Sherlock Holmes
·           Sherlock has blue eyes, fair complexion, sharp nose and dark brown, wavy hair.
·          He is tall, muscular and well-built.
·          He speaks fast and direct.
·          He’s extremelly brilliant and smart.
·          He likes observing everything, then deducing it, and the way he thinking is so detail.
·          He is a professional consulting detective.
·          He enjoys his job like he enjoys something fun.
·          He is little bit anti social because he does not have any friend indeed.
In the beginning of story, Sherlock has very few friends, he thinks he only has enemies. Sally Donovan, a sergeant, calls him as a freak man. Yet, in the end of story he shows an attitude or a manner that actually everybody needs a friend. It is shown when he is telling to Detective Inspector Lestrade about the shooter of Jeff and  he is aware that the man is John, he is pretending shock and asking Lestrade to forget what he said, it is done by him to cover for John. Whether he is aware or not, he is doing something which means everybody needs a friend to help each other, John has helped him then he helps John back by covering for John.
Dr. John H.Watson
John has green eyes, tanned skin (according to Sherlock), round face and blonde hair.
His hair is in army hair style.
He has medium high (tall enough for an army but shorter if he’s compared to Sherlock) and he’s well-built.
He’s not confident and depressed man.
He is an ex-medical doctor recently returned from Afghanistan.
He is a loyal person and smart.
The way he walks is bad because his foot was shot.
In the beginning of story, John is described as a weak, depressed and not confident but after he met Sherlock and joined him in detecting of serial murder. He joined the latest crime in a woman who wears pink clothes, pink nail polish etc. Because of that, under his awarenes he has against his weakness, he can run without his TONGKAT. So, in the end of story he become stronger and brave, he brave to shoot Jeff who is going to kill Sherlock.
Jeff the the cabbie man
Jeff has greyish blue eyes, fair complexion, oval face, and fat body.
He is short, mysterious, old, simple, cruel  but he loves his children so much.
He is a cabbie man (taxi driver) and also an assassin.
Jeff keeps his sponsor (a person who gives him money for each person killed) secret, he really keeps it secret, but when he is under pressure (after he was shot) finally he tells the name of his sponsor ‘Moriarty’. It shows that he is loyal to his sponsor, but he changes when he is under pressure.

ATMOSPHERE
The atmosphere of Sherlock Holmes: A Study in Pink is thrilling and mysterious. It builds anxiety, concious, tense and scared senses to the audience. The audience is forced to think hard about the story. Guessing many times of what happen next to the story. Guessing how the characters are actually.
THEME
The theme of Sherlock Holmes: A Study in Pink is mysterious serial murder, because the story is about some crimes which have same ways in killing the victims : the victims eat pill, and this story is really unpredictable, we as the audience can guessing for many times who is the real assassin, we can guess the assassin is the brother of Sherlock, then we can twist our thought that the assassin is actually Sherlock, then we’ll be shocked when we know that the assassin is a cabbie, we will not suspect that the assassin is a cabbie. That’s why I think this movie is really mysterious.
REFLECTION
This movie is a movie which hard to understand because we really need to think. It has strong characters and characterizations. However it really has an uncommon story. I get some lessons from this movie that we need to think something deep and logically, then how perfect we are, we will need a friend, then how our condition is, we have to fight for that, we have to against our weakness and even though we are in a hard condition (e.g really  need money) we should not take bad way to get the money, although the reason is good (support the family) we should earn money by doing something right. This third project forces me to see the story deeper, how the characterizations are and how the characters are, the result is like on the second project, I understand the lesson material, that is narration part 2, those are about character and characterization, atmosphere and theme.
